Slide Chair

Final project for MA Product and Furniture Design at
Kingston University London.

What

a chair that can be upgraded for functional or cosmetic purposes without generating unnecessary waste. Its minimal look makes it a good fit for informal spaces, both public and private.

How

every component can be purchased separately, and the chair can be easily assembled and disassembled. The seat and frame are available in different colours, making the chair highly customisable and adaptable to different uses.

Why

Slide is a chair that is designed with the idea of avoiding unnecessary furniture waste. If one of the components is damaged or needs a colour update, the customer can change only that specific element.

How can a seat adapt to the evolving needs of its owner?

Slide Chair can be bought as a traditional
flat-pack chair (the customer will receive a disassembled chair) or only specific components (if the customer already owns one and wants to change some parts).
The basic configuration of Slide is the frame (three elements kept together by four screws) and seat (two elements).
The customer can recycle the old part if damaged or exchanged it/sell it to other brand customers. Slide can be easily disassembled. The element that will be more frequently changed is the seat; that’s why there are no tools needed for this operation.

Assembly.

About the project.

For my major project, I wanted to design a chair. I’ve always been passionate about furniture design and throughout the years, I developed an obsession with chairs. It felt natural to use my passion for this piece of furniture as a starting point for this project.

The way chairs are currently sold allows you to customise your purchase, but the personalisation experience is limited to when you shop. When you decide to buy a chair for your house, you want it to be a good match with the rest of the furniture, reflect your style, and be long-lasting. In the current market, depending on which store you decide to buy the chairs from, you surely can choose between different models, but you may also have the possibility to choose from a range of finishes, materials, and accessories for it. However, once you pick the perfect combination and the chair is made, you cannot change it anymore.

What if you could be able to customise the seats in your house and have the possibility to change those features in the future if you want to?

Ideal for informal set-ups, coffee shops, outdoor spaces, and houses.

The frame can be painted in different colours, as well as the seat.

The seat elements can be easily swapped and changed, allowing infinite combinations: one element could be timber and the other polypropylene, or both of the same material.

Thanks to the materials used, Slide can be placed both indoors and outdoors.

The slightly angled seat and back frame and the proportions based on ergonomic studies allow sitting in a comfortable position.
